Reformer Pilates Potters Bar · Full apparatus studio in London Colney · Eight miles on the M25

The handrail, the kerb, the low chair. Reformer Pilates over 60 for strength and balance, about 20 minutes from Potters Bar.

Most people who come to us from Potters Bar are not recovering from anything. They have noticed something: stairs that need the handrail now, a kerb that has to be looked at before it is stepped off, a moment of hesitation getting out of a low chair. None of it is an injury, which is why nobody has offered to do anything about it. The hour that starts here is a Movement Assessment — history, posture and how you actually move — and it measures what has quietly changed, before a single spring is loaded.

Not sure whether any of that is you? The movement self-check takes two minutes →

Getting here from Potters Bar

Two junctions down the M25, and you park at the door.

It is the M25 westbound from Potters Bar, junction 24 to junction 22, and the studio is two minutes off the exit — a shade under eight miles. Put AL2 1JG into the sat-nav for a live time, because on that stretch the traffic decides the journey more than the distance does. The areas we cover has the route and timing from every other town we serve. Also close by: Barnet & Edgware, Borehamwood and London Colney.

The studio is Unit 5, Hertfordshire Business Centre on Alexander Road, with free parking directly outside and no time limit. Ground floor throughout, step-free from the car park to the studio door — which matters more than it sounds if you are arriving in pain.

"Strength you can lose slowly and not notice. Balance you lose slowly and then find out all at once."

Two junctions on the M25 — and the reason for the drive is the room itself, not the class timetable.

What actually changes after 60

Strength goes quietly. Balance goes faster.

Muscle mass starts falling from around the fourth decade and the fall accelerates. That part is well known. Less often said is that the fast-twitch fibres go first and go fastest — the ones that fire when you catch yourself — so strength on a good day can look fine while the reaction that saves you has quietly thinned out.

Balance is not one thing either. It is the inner ear, the eyes, and the sense of where your joints are in space, arbitrated by a nervous system that has to choose between them fast. Any of the three can get less reliable with age or with medication, and the usual response is to narrow what you do: fewer uneven surfaces, fewer stairs, less in the dark. The narrowing is sensible, and it is also the problem, because the system only stays calibrated by being used.

So what we see from Potters Bar is rarely dramatic. It is someone who has stopped doing two or three things without ever deciding to, and who would like the list to stop growing.

Both of those respond to loading. Strength responds to it directly. Balance responds to being challenged in a controlled way — which is what a spring-loaded carriage under a supported body allows, and what a mat class or a walk does not.

Chronic lower back pain
"I can’t recommend Teejay highly enough! My back has been going for years (since I was 15) & when it does I can barely walk. After a series of treatments Teejay got me back on my feet quicker than ever. Since then I have been coming to the studio once a week to strengthen & regain movement. My back hasn’t gone since. If you’re struggle with recurring pain, get booked in! Extremely knowledgeable, supportive & caring."

— Charles S.

"Reformer Pilates has changed my life! Tee Jay has helped me regain my mobility. I’ve been able to move at my own pace in a relaxed & very supportive environment. Highly recommend to anyone who is struggling with aches & pains post menopause! I am now able to get down on the floor to play with my grandchildren without worrying about how I’m going to get back up!!"

— Clare M.

"I highly recommend this practice. Since coming to see Teejay I can’t believe the changes and improvement I have seen in my core fitness and rehab journey. Teejay knows how to pace each session perfectly and is the best physio I have ever been with. All that aside the practice is also very convenient- easy and free parking with a short walk on level ground to the room. Thank you Teejay for supporting my rehab!"

Eight miles to be measured properly first.

Potters Bar is not short of Reformer studios, and a class will make you stronger. What a class cannot do is work out which part of your balance is the one letting you down, or how much reserve you have before a stumble turns into a fall. That takes an hour of assessment first, and a programme that raises the challenge as the reserve grows. The drive buys the assessment, not the apparatus.

Who travels in from Potters Bar

People in their sixties, seventies and eighties, and a fair number who came because an adult child noticed something first. They arrive after a stumble that frightened them, with an arthritic hip or knee that has changed how they walk, or having been told to do weight-bearing exercise without being told which.

Clients come from Potters Bar, Cuffley, Northaw, Brookmans Park, Little Heath and South Mimms. Distances from every town we serve are set out on the areas we cover, and neighbouring pages cover Hatfield, Barnet & Edgware and Shenley & Radlett.

Some are rebuilding after surgery — after knee replacement or hip replacement — or after a course of physio that ended before the confidence came back. Others carry older back pain or sciatica that made them cautious years ago and never quite let go, and shoulder and neck pain often turns up alongside it. Much of this is over-60s work in all but name.

Pilates classes for Potters Bar: what a session involves

The first hour is the Movement Assessment. For strength and balance it looks at the things that actually predict a fall: getting out of a chair without using your hands, how long a single-leg stance holds, how far you can reach before your feet have to move. The Movement Assessment is £85 (60 minutes, 1-to-1). From there the usual route is the Foundation Programme (£269, three 1-to-1 sessions) and then small-group apparatus classes, capped at seven people, or a 1-to-1 Reformer and apparatus course if closer supervision is wanted. For anyone looking for Pilates classes in Potters Bar, the group sessions here are capped at seven and run by the same practitioner who assessed you.

Because this is a full STOTT Pilates apparatus studio — Reformers, Cadillac / Trapeze Table, Stability Chair, Ladder Barrel, Arc Barrel and Long Box — rather than a Reformer-only room, load can be added lying down, seated, or standing with something solid to hold, and taken straight back off the moment technique slips. That is what makes challenging balance sensible rather than reckless. Osteolates Therapy is there for the soft tissue side when that is what is holding things up. Prices and memberships

Potters Bar questions, answered

  • Just under eight miles: M25 westbound, junction 24 to junction 22, then two minutes off the exit. Parking is free, directly outside, and has no time limit.

  • No, and it is the most common starting point here. Nothing happens on a Reformer before the assessment, so you are never guessing at an exercise you have not been taught, and groups are capped at seven so Teejay can watch everyone in the room. If you want a sense of it first, the free movement self-check takes about two minutes.

  • The Movement Assessment is £85 (60 minutes, 1-to-1). After that: the Foundation Programme is £269 for three 1-to-1 sessions, single 1-to-1 sessions are £95, and a six-session 1-to-1 course is £479 — about £79 a session. Small-group apparatus classes are £32 pay-as-you-go or £299 for a 10-session block, about £30 a session. Memberships start at £129 a month. Full detail is on prices and memberships.

  • A class teaches one sequence to a room, and the room gets that sequence whatever each body needs that week. Here the sequence follows an hour spent measuring what your strength and balance currently are, and it moves as those move. That is the difference clinical Pilates makes.

  • Loaded, progressive work does, and spring resistance with the body supported is one way of getting load into a skeleton that cannot yet tolerate standing under weights. What it is not is a substitute for medical advice about bone density — that stays with whoever is managing it.

  • The studio runs Monday to Thursday 7:30am–7:30pm, Friday 7:30am–5:30pm and Saturday 7:30am–1:30pm. Group classes are booked through the timetable; assessments, 1-to-1 sessions and Osteolates Therapy are arranged through the enquiry form or on 07734 578959. Potters Bar clients tend to prefer the mid-morning slots, once the M25 has calmed down.
