- SHOULDER & NECK PAIN · LONDON COLNEY, ST ALBANS -

Hours at a desk?
That's usually where
the pain started.

Shoulder and neck pain rarely starts with an injury. Instead, it builds gradually from posture, repetitive strain, and muscle imbalance — often from years at a desk or behind a wheel. At The Sogunro Practice in London Colney, we identify exactly what's driving the tension, then correct it with Applied Pilates and Osteolates Therapy rather than just easing the symptoms. £85 Movement assessment Identifies what is actually driving your shoulder or neck tension

Areas, one root cause -Shoulder and neck pain are frequently linked through posture and upper back mobility

Specialist methods combined - Osteolates soft tissue treatment + Applied Pilates exercise

"My shoulders and neck are permanently tight, no matter how many massages I have." Massage relieves tension. It rarely changes the posture and movement pattern causing it.

Teejay's Approach

- UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSE -

Why shoulder and neck pain
keeps coming back

Shoulder and neck pain are among the most common reasons clients come to The Sogunro Practice in St Albans. In particular, the underlying cause is rarely the shoulder or neck itself. Instead, it is usually a postural pattern — rounded shoulders, a forward head position, or a stiff upper back — that has built up gradually over years.

As a result, treatments that focus only on the painful area, such as a massage or a single stretch routine, tend to provide temporary relief at best. In particular, tight chest muscles and weak mid-back stabilisers frequently pull the shoulders forward, placing chronic strain on the neck — and the neck takes the blame for a postural problem elsewhere in the chain.

"A tight neck is rarely the problem on its own. It's usually compensating for a stiff upper back or weak shoulder blades that aren't doing their job."

Because of this, every new client starts with a thorough movement assessment. Therefore, we understand exactly how your posture, shoulder mechanics, and upper back mobility are working together before any exercise is prescribed.

Common causes of shoulder and neck pain

Each cause shapes how the condition is managed — which is why a thorough assessment matters before any treatment plan begins.

MOST COMMON

Desk posture & "text neck"- Hours spent looking down at screens place sustained strain on the neck and upper back, gradually weakening postural muscles.

POSTURAL

Rounded shoulders Tight chest muscles and weak mid-back muscles pulling the shoulders forward, placing chronic strain on the neck.

STRUCTURAL

Shoulder impingement - Tendons becoming compressed during overhead movement, often linked to weak rotator cuff and scapular stabilisers.

WEAR & TEAR

Cervical & facet degeneration - Degenerative changes in the neck, often presenting alongside facet joint syndrome. Facet joint syndrome →

- RECOGNISING THE PATTERN -

Shoulder and neck pain symptoms - what you may be experiencing

Symptoms vary depending on the underlying cause. In addition, how long the pattern has been building also matters. However, most people experience some combination of the following.

✓ Tightness across the upper back and shoulders

Headaches starting at the base of the skull

Clicking or catching in the shoulder

Tension that worsens through the working day

Pain or stiffness turning the head

Pain reaching overhead or behind the back

Pins and needles down the arm

 Difficulty sleeping on one side

In particular, tension that returns within days of a massage — despite feeling better temporarily — is one of the most common reasons clients come to The Sogunro Practice in St Albans.

Why generic exercise can make it worse

⚠️

Stretching tight muscles without strengthening weak ones

Stretching the neck and upper traps feels good temporarily. However, without strengthening the weak mid-back muscles pulling against them, the tightness simply returns.

⚠️

Ignoring the upper back

A stiff thoracic spine often forces the neck and shoulders to compensate. Treating only the neck while ignoring upper back mobility rarely resolves the pattern.

⚠️

Overhead exercise before stability is established

Introducing overhead shoulder exercises before scapular control is established can aggravate impingement rather than resolve it.

- THE TREATMENT PATHWAY -

A structured approach to shoulder and neck pain

Shoulder and neck pain rarely resolves with a single technique applied in isolation. However, with the right combination at each stage, most clients achieve significant and lasting relief.

01

ACUTE PHASE

Releasing tension & restoring mobility - In the early stage, Osteolates soft tissue treatment releases chronically tight muscles in the neck, shoulders and upper back. As a result, mobility improves and the nervous system's protective guarding reduces. This prepares the body safely for the next stage.

02

REHABILITATION PHASE

Strengthening the postural stabilisers - Applied Pilates targets the specific weak links identified in your assessment — most commonly the mid-back, scapular stabilisers, and deep neck flexors. Because of this, the structures actually responsible for good posture are retrained, not just stretched.

03

PROGRESSIVE PHASE

Building lasting postural resilience - As strength and control improve, the programme progresses towards functional movement — overhead reaching, desk posture, or sport-specific demands. Most clients then transition to small group membership to maintain progress long term.

WHY THE FULL APPARATUS MATTERS

The Reformer and Cadillac allow shoulder and upper back exercises to be precisely loaded and supported. As a result, scapular control can be developed safely before progressing to more demanding overhead movement. Full apparatus studio →

DESK-BASED WORK & DAILY HABITS

Alongside your sessions, we help identify the daily habits maintaining the pattern — desk set-up, phone posture, and sleeping position — so progress isn't undone between appointments.

"You can't stretch your way out of a posture you sit in for eight hours a day. You have to retrain it." TEEJAY SOGUNRO

- COMMON QUESTIONS -

Questions about shoulder & neck pain treatment

Why does my neck hurt when the problem might be my upper back? The neck, upper back and shoulders work together as part of a postural chain. If the upper back (thoracic spine) is stiff, the neck and shoulders frequently compensate by working harder than they should. As a result, the neck becomes painful even though the underlying restriction started in the upper back. This is why a full movement assessment looks beyond just the painful area.

Can Pilates help with shoulder impingement? Yes. Applied Pilates focuses first on retraining scapular control — the muscles that stabilise the shoulder blade — before progressing to more demanding overhead movement. Because of this, impingement symptoms often improve significantly once the shoulder blade is working correctly again. Learn about Reformer Pilates →

I've had massage for years and the tension always comes back. Why? Massage relieves muscular tension effectively, but it rarely changes the posture and movement pattern causing the tension to build up in the first place. As a result, the same muscles tighten again within days or weeks. Combining Osteolates Therapy with Applied Pilates addresses both the tension and the underlying pattern maintaining it.

Can desk posture really cause this much pain? Yes. Hours spent looking down at a screen, sometimes referred to as "text neck," place sustained strain on the neck and upper back. Over months and years, this gradually weakens the postural muscles that should be supporting good alignment. As a result, what starts as mild stiffness can develop into chronic pain.

How much does shoulder and neck pain treatment cost in St Albans? All new clients start with the £85 movement assessment. After that, Osteolates Therapy sessions are from £65, 1-to-1 Applied Pilates sessions from £95, and monthly group membership from £129. Full prices and membership options →
