APPLIED PILATES · STRENGTH, BALANCE & MOBILITY · LONDON COLNEY, ST ALBANS

Nothing is wrong with you. You’re just stiff, sore and achy — and quietly doing a little less each year than you did the year before.

Most people arrive at this studio with a diagnosis. You haven't got one. You're stiff first thing, something aches for two days after the garden, and it all settles again — so there's nothing to take to a doctor, and nothing anyone would call an injury.

What is actually happening

Why “just keep active” isn’t the answer

There is just less of you available than there used to be. Getting off the floor takes a hand now. You take the stairs more carefully in the dark. You've stopped carrying both bags in one trip. None of that was a decision — the list of things you no longer do simply got longer, a bit at a time, and nobody points it out to you.

Almost everyone who comes to me in this position is already active. They walk, they garden, they play golf. What they have lost isn't activity — it's range and control: the ability to produce force in positions they no longer visit. A body that only moves through the same narrow set of shapes becomes very good at those shapes and progressively worse at everything else. Generic exercise doesn't correct that, because generic exercise is built from the same shapes. That is the whole problem in one sentence.

"This is the easiest stage to do something about, and the one almost everybody waits out. Most of the people described on the other pages of this site felt exactly like this first."

The apparatus suite

Springs, not your own body weight.

On a leg press, or in a mat class, load and body weight arrive together — you have to carry yourself before anything can be strengthened. Spring resistance separates the two. The Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and Barrels load the muscle while supporting the joint, which means we can build real strength in positions you have not visited for years, without asking your body to tolerate its own weight there first.

Core
Reformer
Spring-resistance carriage. Develops strength, flexibility and control simultaneously. The foundation of STOTT Pilates.
Advanced
Cadillac · Trapeze Table
Full rehabilitation range of motion. Post-surgical, hypermobility, and spinal conditions. The most versatile apparatus available.
Strength
Wunda Chair
Functional leg and core strength. Stability training for everyday movement. The foundation of balance that holds up under surprise.
Spinal
Spine Corrector
Spinal articulation and extension. Particularly effective for back pain, postural correction and scoliosis management.
Flexibility
Ladder Barrel
Extended range of motion work. Addresses stiffness, restricted movement and thoracic spine mobility.
Precision
Small Props
Arc barrel, foam roller, resistance bands. Technique refinement and proprioceptive training alongside the main apparatus.
Why does the full apparatus suite matter? Most reformer instructors hold a reformer-only qualification. Teejay's STOTT PILATES® Full Comprehensive Certification covers all six apparatus and took over four years to complete. This means every piece of apparatus is used correctly and with clinical precision — not just available as a prop. View full credentials →

The same assessment

The same assessment. Just earlier.

There is no separate “wellness” version of what happens here. You get the same 60-minute movement assessment as someone six weeks out of a knee replacement: how you actually move, where you're compensating, what has gone without your noticing, and what to do about it in the order that works. What changes is what we do with the answer. When nothing is injured we can load properly, progress faster, and spend the time building capacity instead of unpicking a problem. It is the most straightforward work I do, and it produces the most durable results.

01
Rehabilitation-informed — not fitness Pilates
Every exercise is chosen because it is clinically appropriate for your body. Fewer well-chosen exercises deliver more lasting results than dozens of generic ones. Teejay's approach is shaped by sports therapy, osteopathic principles and STOTT Pilates methodology.
About Teejay's approach
02
Full apparatus — not Reformer-only
Most local studios offer Reformer beds only. Applied Pilates has the full STOTT range: Reformers, Cadillac, Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair, Barrels — tools most studios simply don't have. This means rehabilitation exercises that a standard studio cannot offer.

Maximum 7 clients per session
Teejay knows your history, your movement patterns, and your limitations session by session. This is not the 10-to-13-person boutique reformer class model recently criticised by the Guardian and the Sunday Times as a source of injuries.

Programme built on your assessment
Every new client starts with a £85 movement assessment. Your programme is specific to your body — not a generic routine applied to everyone in the room. No two clients follow the same plan, even within the same group session.

What we are building

Strength you can use, balance you keep, and a body that tolerates surprise.

Strength that matters is not numbers in a gym — it is getting off the floor unaided, carrying a case upstairs, and putting something on a high shelf without thinking about it first. Balance has a steeper use-it-or-lose-it curve than almost anything else in the body: it responds quickly to being trained and just as quickly to being ignored. Mobility holds when the strength exists to control it, rather than stretching that buys a few hours of feeling looser. And robustness — the kerb you didn't see, the bag heavier than you expected — is trainable, which is the entire point.

Chronic Lower Back Pain
The most common reason clients come to The Sogunro Practice. We address the cause — not just the symptom.

Sciatica & Nerve Pain
Sciatica responds well to targeted movement. The wrong exercises make it worse. Every programme is built around your specific presentation.

Facet Joint Syndrome
Repeated flare-ups of severe back pain often trace back to facet joint dysfunction. Requires a specific long-term approach.

Men's Applied Pilates
Most men who attend are not there for fitness. They come because they're in pain, post-surgery, or injured in sport.

Clients who come for this are most often between 45 and 75, though the youngest are in their thirties and the oldest in their eighties. What they have in common isn't age; it's having noticed. You don't need a referral, a diagnosis, or a reason — not being injured is a good enough reason.

Everyone begins the same way — with an honest assessment of what your body can actually do now, and what has been quietly getting in the way. In practice people in this position reach the small-group sessions sooner than the rehab clients do, because there is less to unpick first.

Common questions

Questions people ask before they book

  • At The Sogunro Practice in London Colney: movement assessment £85, 1-to-1 sessions from £79.83 per session on the 6-session course, small group PAYG £32, and monthly membership from £129/month. Osteolates Therapy from £65. Every session uses the full STOTT apparatus with a maximum of 7 clients and a programme built around your movement assessment. Full pricing →
  • No — and the older you are, the more the balance work pays back. The clients whose progress is most visible are in their seventies, and the oldest are in their eighties. Nothing about the apparatus requires you to get down onto a mat.
  • It won't be. Fit people are usually the most surprised by the assessment, because being strong in one direction hides the gaps in every other. Runners, cyclists and swimmers tend to find the first session humbling and the tenth transformative.
  • No. Flexibility is an outcome here, not a prerequisite. Spring-loaded apparatus means we work within whatever range you have today and build from there.
  • If something changed suddenly, wakes you at night, or simply isn't settling, then yes — see your GP. Ordinary morning stiffness and next-day soreness aren't that, and they need no referral and nobody's permission. Working out what is safe, and what is worth doing, is exactly what the assessment is for.

Approximately 10 minutes from St Albans, Radlett, Hatfield, Bricket Wood, Shenley and Colney Heath — around 15 minutes from Barnet and Edgware, and within a 10-mile drive of Harpenden, Watford, Borehamwood, Wheathampstead, Redbourn and Welwyn Garden City. Map and full directions →
  • No. The youngest people here are usually desk-bound, already stiff, and doing one sport hard. Starting early is how you avoid ever needing the other pages on this site, and the work is faster and more enjoyable now than it will ever be again.
  • Once or twice a week. Strength work needs a day or two between sessions to do its job; mobility work can be done daily. Knowing which is which is half of what you will learn here.
  • Sessions run Monday to Thursday from 7:30am to 8:30pm, Friday from 7:30am to 5:30pm, and Saturday from 7:30am to 1:30pm. View the full timetable →
